World Speech Day
March 15, 2024
“I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of it’s creed…”
-Martin Luther King
Imagine a world where this well known speech didn’t exist…imagine not being able to share your thoughts and make your ideas, needs and wants known. What impact would this have had on the US, if MLK didn’t share his thoughts and lead? On World Speech Day, Buckeye Speech Path is drawing awareness to the human ability to speak. As a speech therapy practice that provides traditional services, we often have both pediatric and adult clients who struggle with their ability to speak. We are fortunate to be able to work with these clients to help them set goals and remediate or rehabilitate their deficits. These people can often go on to gain the confidence to use their speech skills in a variety of daily situations, and even compose a speech of their own, should they have the desire. On World Speech Day, it is our hope that all of the past people who needed speech therapy services were able to make a speech at some point that was meaningful to them, and the people around them.
However, this gift that speech therapists have, of helping others improve their speech often stays with those who have some sort of a deficit. But what about those who do not have any particular conditions, disorder or deficit? How do they work on improving their skills to become confident communicators, especially at a young age? We cannot rely solely on teachers to address this skill, as they are responsible for so much already. How do we foster this at a young age to promote success in this area? We know as adults that leadership directly correlates with the ability to be an effective communicator, but how is this directly being instructed? As parents, we often hope that all of the embedded lessons in these areas just translate over to our children. But, what if they don’t? We all know children and teenagers that are more reserved, or shy, and might even feel very uncomfortable speaking in groups or the classroom. We also likely know children and teens who are confident, but still struggle with some of those communication skills. At Buckeye Speech Path, this is an area we feel very passionate about, and a gift we believe we have to offer to the community. We feel there is a void of services in this area that cannot be easily found, and we are thrilled to offer a solution. What a better time than March, celebrating World Speech Day, to kick off our general group communication classes for middle and high school students. At Buckeye Speech Path you can expect a fun and interactive hour long group class that will rotate between public speaking, confident communication, and active listening topics. You can now sign your child up on the website for classes through the end of the school year! Take some time to look through our group offerings and invest in your child. If you have questions, we would love to answer them for you. Just email at nsizler@buckeyespeechpath.com. Feel free to share this information with anyone who might benefit and even consider having your child come to a class with a friend. We cannot wait to get to know your children, and help them foster the communication confidence we know they have!
Warmly,
